Vicky MacRae

I am a BBSRC Institute Career Path Fellow, at The Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh. I was awarded my BSc in Zoology in 2000 and my PhD in muscle physiology in 2004, both from the University of Edinburgh. I undertook my first postdoctoral post at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow, with Colin Farquharson and Faisal Ahmed (2004-2007). This work examined the inhibitory effects exerted by cytokines on growth plate chondrocytes.

My subsequent postdoctoral position with Colin Farquharson at The Roslin Institute was funded by the National Institute of Health (2007-2009), and examined the mechanisms of initiation of skeletal mineralisation.

My current BBSRC fellowship extends these studies by applying the discovery of new mediators of bone mineralisation to unravelling the regulation of vascular calcification, a process considerably less well understood.

I am a member of BRS, ECTS, NAVBO and The Biochemical Society. I am keen to make a strong contribution to the work of the committee of BRS, which continues to drive progress in the bone field through the integration of basic and clinical research.
