Satellite Workshops

At the 2013 meeting a series of pre-meeting satellite workshops was organised.  Because this was so successful we will be repeating the venture for the 2014 meeting.  Details of the workshops are given below.

Apart from the Rare Bone Diseases Workshop there is no charge for delegates registered for the main meeting.

Places at most of the workshops are limited so please register as soon as possible to guarantee your place.

Tuesday 24 June

BRS/Mellanby Centre for Bone Research Pre-meeting Workshops

Venue: The University of Sheffield Medical School

13:00-14:30

New Investigator Workshop

A guide to successfully presenting your work at a scientific meeting

Celia Gregson (Bristol, UK)
Adam Taylor (Lancaster, UK)

Too often the key message of a presentation can be drowned within a sea of data. This interactive workshop will cover practical guidance towards structuring and formatting presentations and posters for conferences, including the classic “do’s & don’ts”, so that your presentation can be memorable for all the right reasons!

We are delighted to announce that Dr Gaynor Miller, University of Sheffield, has agreed to deliver a plenary lecture titled “Effectively presenting your data at a scientific meeting”.  Following on from this there will be the opportunity for some attendees to present work and to receive constructive feedback from the organisers and other participants.

Due to the nature of the workshop, places for attendance and presentation are strictly limited and will be offered on a first come first served basis.

14:30-15:30

Systems Biology Workshop

Tom Kirkwood (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK)
Carole Proctor (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK)

This workshop will give participants an overview of the interdisciplinary nature of systems biology  and will provide an introduction to computational modelling techniques. There will also be the opportunity for discussion on how these approaches could be used in age-related bone diseases.

15:30-17:00

Concurrent Workshops

In Vivo CT

Ilaria Bellantuono, Maya Boudiffa, Les Coulton (Sheffield, UK)

This workshop will give participants a practical appreciation of ex vivo and in vivo microCT techniques, covering the basics to more in depth detail and the opportunity to discuss/troubleshoot your own projects.

Bone Histopathology

David Hughes (Sheffield, UK)

All you wanted to know about bone histology but were afraid to ask! In this interactive workshop Consultant Histopathologist David Hughes will guide you through the art of bone histology.

Please bring along any troublesome or intriguing slides to illustrate your questions and David will endeavour to answer them.

Muscle and Bone

Alex Ireland (Manchester, UK)/Kate Ward (Cambridge, UK)

Supported by Novotec Medical

Understanding the relationship between muscle and bone is becoming a well-established area of research.  Studies focus on both the direct mechanical influence of muscular action on bone, and common endocrine pathways linking the two.  The aim of this Workshop is to introduce the topic to those new to the area, and bring together those working in different disciplines (e.g. biochemistry, imaging, biomechanics, clinical practice, muscle or bone physiology).  Following the Workshop, there will be an opportunity for attendees to meet colleagues working in the area with the aim of establishing a special interest group within the Society.

The BRS will make a contribution towards travel costs for New Investigators* attending the meeting.  A claim form will be provided during the Workshop.  We are grateful to Novotec Medical for their assistance with these awards.

*Defined as being within 3 years of attainment of higher degree or completion of specialist training
